Can you hear that? It’s the sound of a digital champagne cork popping.
This July marks a milestone that feels both like a lifetime and a blink of an eye, with the official anniversary date just ahead on August 1st: Ledgers By Liisa LLC is officially twenty years old.
In the world of small business, twenty years is more than just a number on a birthday card. It’s a badge of honor. It’s two decades of economic shifts, technological revolutions, and thousands of reconciled transactions. It’s twenty years of partnering with incredible business owners, watching startups become icons, and, most importantly, Keeping Two Eyes on Your Books.
To celebrate this "Big Two-Oh," we’re launching a brand new series called Beyond Bookkeeping. This isn’t a return to the basics we’ve covered in past series like Behind the Books, and it’s not simply a nostalgic look back like Time Sure Does Fly. Over the next few weeks, we’re focusing on the deeper perspective that only a 20-year journey can offer: the strategy, judgment, and long-view thinking that help businesses grow with Clear. Creative. Calm. confidence.
But before we look forward, we have to look back. Because to understand where we’re going in 2026, we have to remember where we started in 2006, and the official first day that set it all in motion: August 1st.
2006: The Land of Paper, Dust, and Desktop
If you were in business in 2006, your "books" probably looked a lot different.
Back then, "cloud computing" sounded like something a meteorologist would talk about on the evening news. Most Full Service Bookkeeping happened on a single machine in a back office. You had your QuickBooks Desktop installation, your backup discs (remember those?), and probably a very large filing cabinet.
In 2006, bookkeeping was largely a game of hindsight. You gathered your receipts, you tallied your expenses, and at the end of the month: or heaven forbid, the end of the quarter: you finally saw how you were doing. It was like driving a car while only looking in the rearview mirror. You knew where you’d been, but you had a very blurry view of what was coming up through the windshield.
At Ledgers By Liisa, we were there with our green eyeshades (metaphorically speaking) making sure every penny was accounted for. But even then, our founder, Liisa Bartges, knew that business owners needed more than just a history lesson. They needed clarity. From day one on August 1st, the vision was never just bookkeeping for bookkeeping’s sake. It was about building the kind of financial visibility that helps a business stay strong for the long haul.
The Great Migration: From Folders to the Cloud
As we hit the 2010s, the landscape shifted. Intuit began putting its weight behind QuickBooks Online (QBO), and suddenly, the "rearview mirror" started to clear up.
The move to the cloud wasn't just about getting rid of paper (though our desks certainly appreciated the extra space). It was about access. For the first time, a business owner could check their cash flow while sitting at a coffee shop, and their bookkeeper could reconcile a transaction in real-time from across town.
This was the beginning of our Clear. Creative. Calm. philosophy.
Clear: Better visibility created better decision-making.
Creative: Better information opened the door to smarter growth strategies.
Calm: Better oversight brought confidence, not just compliance.
2026: The AI Edge and Continuous Visibility
Fast forward to today, 2026. If 2006 was the era of the ledger and 2016 was the era of the cloud, 2026 is the era of Visibility.
Today, we use QBO paired with sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools that help create a more connected financial picture. The result is not just faster bookkeeping. It’s stronger visibility, a system that stays up-to-date every single day, and better timing for leadership decisions.
But here’s the secret: technology alone isn’t enough. You can have the most expensive AI in the world, but if nobody is Keeping Two Eyes on Your Books, you’re just automating your mistakes.
That’s why, after 20 years, our core mission hasn’t changed. We use the best tools from Intuit and beyond to give you financial visibility, but we provide the human oversight that turns data into wisdom. That’s what Beyond Bookkeeping means to us after two decades in business.
Why Visibility is the Bedrock of Longevity
You might be wondering: “Liisa, why are you so obsessed with visibility?”
Because visibility is the difference between a business that survives five years and one that celebrates twenty.
When you have a Clear view of your financials, you can:
Protect Margin Early: Small leaks rarely stay small over the course of 20 years. Visibility helps you preserve what you’ve built.
Make Bold Moves: You can’t be Creative with your growth if you’re second-guessing your numbers. Visibility gives you the confidence to invest, expand, or pivot with intention.
Scale Without Stress: Growth usually brings complexity. But with an organized Fresh Start and ongoing monthly support, you can scale while maintaining a sense of Calm.
Looking Ahead: Beyond Bookkeeping
This anniversary isn't just a look back at where we've been; it's an invitation to go further.
The "Beyond Bookkeeping" series is designed to help you transition from someone who "has a bookkeeper" to someone who "runs a financially intelligent organization." This series is about perspective, not tutorials. It’s about what twenty years of experience can teach us about resilience, leadership, and long-term financial decision-making. Over the coming weeks, we’ll dive into:
Stopping cash leaks in growing businesses.
Using outside money (like loans) strategically.
The Return on Investment (ROI) of rest (scaling without burnout).
We are so proud of the journey we’ve taken over the last two decades, beginning on August 1st and growing into a practice built on Clear. Creative. Calm. guidance. From the early days of manual entries to the high-speed, AI-driven world of 2026, we’ve remained dedicated to one thing: your success.
If your current financial view feels a little foggy, maybe it’s time for a Consultation. Let’s get those "Two Eyes" on your books and set you up for the next twenty years.
The Tip Jar
Each week, we’re dropping a few "pennies" of wisdom into the jar: strategic reminders for leaders who want to build businesses that last.
Treat Visibility as a Growth Asset: The businesses that last don’t just track numbers. They use visibility to make better decisions earlier.
Review to Make Sure Your Accounts Match Your Business Goals: Your financial reports should reflect where your business is going, not just where it has been.
Protecting Your Profit (the money left over): Long-term success is often shaped by small decisions repeated consistently over time.
Create a Weekly Leadership Pulse: A short, high-level review of the financial picture can keep strategy grounded, proactive, and Calm.
